SUPERVISION

Model of Supervision

I define the purpose of supervision as ensuring client welfare and fostering the supervisee’s professional development through the evaluative relationship between supervisor and supervisee. With this two-fold purpose in mind, a primary requirement of effective supervision includes increasing the supervisee’s competence in psychological intervention and assessment through relevant knowledge of scientific literature, therapeutic skills, and personal attitudes impacting the supervisee-client relationship. As a supervisor, I give close attention to issues of competence, the supervisee’s emotional awareness, autonomy, identity, respect for individual differences, purpose and direction, personal motivation, and professional ethics throughout the supervision process. I therefore use a developmental model of supervision, which allows me to create an appropriate learning environment for supervisees to progress to the next developmental level as counseling professionals. I will work with you to understand your preferred model of counseling and provide supervision compatible with your theoretical framework as much as possible.

The goal for supervision is to provide mentoring and coaching to counselors with various levels of training and preparation. The objective for supervision is to provide supervisees with feedback and guidance regarding their awareness and skill with diverse groups of clients.

  Philosophy of Supervision

You can read a brief statement of my philosophy of supervision here.

I am an AAMFT Approved Supervisor.

Evaluation Procedures in Supervisory Relationship

In all cases, the purpose of supervision requires an element of evaluation. The process of evaluation combines a subjective component (the supervisor’s thoughts and insights on the supervisee) and the objective standards outlined in the codes of ethics for counselors and supervisors. It is my desire to create and maintain a favorable context for supervision by promoting open and honest dialogue about the relationship between client, supervisee, and supervisor.

My supervision will consist of live observations, tape reviews, and individual case presentations. The supervisee will complete periodic self-assessments and evaluations of the supervision experience. Examples include:

  1. Supervision Questionnaire
  2. Supervisee Levels Questionnaire-Revised
  3. Supervisee Perceptions of Supervision
  4. Evaluation Process Within Supervision Inventory
  5. Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory: Trainee Form
  6. Supervisory Styles Inventory

Supervising Ethics
Although I am not an Approved Clinical Supervisor, I abide by the following codes of ethics:

  1. Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice endorsed by The Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) Standards for Ethical Practice of Clinical Supervision
  2. American Counselors Association
  3. American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Tennessee Board for Licensed Professional Counselors, Marital and Family Therapists, and Clinical Pastoral Therapists.
